Guy Fawkes Night 2011 in Orlando / Kissimmee

Guy Fawkes night is commemorated on Saturday evening, November 5th, 2011 in Central Florida beginning at 7.00 PM. The British cultural event in Florida includes food, shows and games along with an 8.00 PM bonfire lighting, and culminating with a 9.30 PM fireworks display.

This year Champions Resort will host the annual Guy Fawkes Night celebration in Kissimmee, Florida. The resort is located at 8660 West Irlo Bronson (West 192)  in Kissimmee. There is a small entrance fee for both children and adults.

Guy Fawkes Night Kissimmee celebrates the historical date of November 5th, 1605 when a man named Guy Fawkes was stopped in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament. He had in his possession barrels of gunpowder with the intention of blowing up the British landmark.

Guy Fawkes and his eight co-conspirators were subsequently sentenced to death. In celebration of saving the Houses of Parliament and the safety of the King, bonfires were set to commemorate the day. Some 400 years later, this tradition is also typically celebrated with a spectacular fireworks display.

It is commonplace for children to make a Guy Fawkes effigy out of old clothing. The kids stuff the effigy with paper and straw which they subsequently place on the large bonfire parties.

With thousands of British tourists staying in area vacation rentals and a huge area expat population in and around Central Florida, Guy Fawkes Night is a great way to enjoy a much awaited and observed British cultural tradition.

Tea Time Tips for the British Tourist in Orlando

We digress from our usual writings at the request of a dear British lady that e-mailed us today. She was complaining about “the tea” while visiting the US. To get our ideas on where to buy British supplies visit our post HERE.

My old next door neighbor in the UK was on the original D-Day landing force during World War II. He explained that the Americans were great allies, but they could never understand why the British soldiers would break all the time for tea. I guess you have to be British to understand the importance tea plays in British culture and society.

The average British person drinks 3 cups of tea per day. Although many tea supplies can now be purchased in Florida, most British people like to put their feet up and have a good cuppa after a long flight to Orlando rather than have to go shopping.

For British tourists:

  1. When eating out in Orlando, always ask for a “small side of milk” with a “hot tea” (otherwise you will be given an ice tea with cream).
  2. For convenience sake, bring your own tea bags
  3. Bring your own biscuits
  4. The US tea brand Lipton © is not PG Tips ©
  5. Rent a vacation home that has a tea kettle. Many management companies specialize in the British market, and some make sure these are available. Some management companies even offer tea kits.

For Orlando based businesses:

We think it is a good policy for any business in the Orlando market catering to UK tourists to understand the importance of tea to British culture. This also can present itself as a marketing opportunity when catering to the UK market.

Our American colleagues and friends might say, “… when in Rome” which is quite valid, but imagine how important tea is in British culture when, as an example, hardened British soldiers took time to “brew-up” on the battlefield. Ask any UK construction worker and they will tell you Britain was built on tea.

British Tourism Market to Orlando Florida Gets Worse

We had previously identified that the perfect storm could be about to hit the massive UK tourism market (approx. $1,000,000,000) to Orlando. It would appear the perfect storm is now happening.

The British pound just hit a 25 year low against the dollar and is getting worse. The cost to a British person to visit Orlando based purely on the exchange rate is now at a 25 year high.

The reason for the dramatic devaluation in the pound is due to the problems in the banking industry in the UK which have reached dire proportions and are getting worse by the day. Royal Bank of Scotland’s problems appear to be wreaking more havoc on the UK economy (2).

In conclusion, the implosion of the UK economy will be tough on Orlando tourism and the economy as a whole. A 15% to 20% decline in this market for 2009 would not be unrealistic given the current circumstances, but then no one can predict the future including us – we are incompetent non-professionals.

British Market – Lifeblood of Orlando Tourism ?

This post assesses if the perfect storm in 2009 could hit Orlando’s massive UK tourism market. We will also detail why metro Orlando is dependent on this market segment for a healthy and vibrant tourist economy.

In 2007, approximately 990,000 British tourists(1) visited the Orlando and Kissimmee area populating Orlando vacation homes and hotels alike. The British spent approx $1,000,000,000 dollars in the metro Orlando area in 2007.

For 2009, the UK market could be negatively hit in a significant manner for the following reasons:

  1. The “wheels” have come off the UK economy(2). With the economy forecasted to slow as much as 2.3% (2B) by some to an incredible 5-10% by others(2C).
  2. The British pound(3) has depreciated in value about 30% in the last three months against the dollar. America as a destination is now 30% more expensive for a British visitor.
  3. The British typically book their big summer vacation in January, so Orlando has not yet been booked in many cases for the summer of 2009. This January window could slip by due to the dire condition of the British economy and Orlando could lose the chance of capturing this business.
  4. Air fares have not dropped significantly(4), despite the drop in oil prices making Orlando very expensive when compared to destinations closer to Britain.
  5. The British are some of the worlds heaviest credit card users and these lines of credit are becoming restricted (5).

So a significant drop in UK tourists for 2009 would be significant to the local Orlando economy and could be a real probability. If you reside in metro Orlando, this would most likely affect you.

In conclusion, Orlando relies on the British tourism market especially in September when the domestic vacation market is relatively slow. What the future holds no one knows - no one can predict the future – including us. We merely offer non-professional opinions.
