Just when you thought Orlando had it all, Universal Studios plans for the big gorilla to return. King Kong Skull Island Universal Orlando is coming soon to terrorize park goers.

It’s now official, the King Kong Skull Island attraction is set for Universal Orlando in 2016. The name of the new attraction will officially be Skull Island: Reign of Kong. Click here to see the official Universal Studios® announcement.

The new King Kong attraction will be the first at Universal Orlando since the park’s mega-hit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter introduced 5 years ago.

This will be quite different from the King Kong attraction at Universal that closed in 2002. For that venue, Kong terrorized the citizens of New York City in “Kongfrontation”. For the new King Kong Skull Island Universal Orlando ride, guests will be transported through a wild jungle to see the towering gorilla.

The History of King Kong at Universal Orlando

Kongfrontation was an attraction at the park until September 2002. Animatronics at the attraction created the action part of the themed ride. The King Kong ride lasted in all for 12 years and was replaced by the Revenge of the Mummy attraction.

The King Kong Skull Island attraction promises to combine all of the latest technology to “immerse” Universal guests with the Kong legend. Executive Producer Mike West made the announcement about the Reign of Kong attraction including comments about 3D characters and scenery.

Guests will be transported through the park in large safari-type vehicles. The jungle-like setting will be filled with caves and ancient surprises such as temples and dinosaurs.

The King Kong Skull Island Universal Orlando ride will benefit from consulting from movie director Peter Jackson who directed the 2005 King Kong movie. He also directed the Hobbit cinematic trilogy as well so this venue promises to be one part drama and one part thrilling entertainment.
