With the news that Delta Air Lines purchased a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic, international travellers are hopeful that more direct flights to Orlando are on the horizon. This Delta Virgin Atlantic deal news coupled with the fact that the US Commerce Department projects robust international growth out to the Year 2017 should bode well for Orlando tourism.
Delta Air Lines recently announced a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic Airways subject to regulatory approval. The Wall Street Journal reports that Delta currently only has 9% of the London-New York and this move is at least in part an effort to gain a stronger foothold for that international segment. Virgin Atlantic also currently competes with British Airways (Partner with American Airlines) for the London-Orlando direct flight segment. These direct nonstop flights from London to Orlando typically run once per day although multi-stop flights are also available.
Insiders are hopeful that the Virgin Atlantic purchase by Delta might deliver more convenient itineraries for Orlando-UK flights. Expansion of nonstop options between Orlando and London should help deliver an increasing amount of passenger volume for a destination that is quite important for regional tourism.
Projections for continued international travel growth also bodes well for Orlando travel and tourism. Click here for the international travel projection details for 2011-2017. This report indicates that the United States can look forward to anywhere from 3.6 to 4.3% growth annually in international visitor spending for this period of time. The highest projected passenger volume growth over the next 5 years (cumulative) includes:
- China +259% Growth
- Brazil +83% Growth
- India +47% Growth
- United Kingdom +18%
Despite the well publicized issues for the state of the international economy, these forecasts were well received and could end up being conservative as global business conditions improve.
