A surprising new industry research report was just released on the popularity of vacation rentals. 8 in 10 Americans don’t consider vacation rentals for their travel accommodations. The report was compiled by PhocusWright, a leading global tourism and travel research and consulting firm.
The first thing that caught our eye has to deal with mainstream American awareness of vacation rentals. Apart from the 17% that stay in vacation villas regularly, approximately 80% of those remaining travelers don’t even consider rentals as a serious option. General awareness of vacation rental availability and brand recognition is a nagging problem for the industry.
The large vacation rental directory companies such as Homeaway® and VRBO® have led to increased public awareness gains. However, these “brand” awareness gains by large directory listing companies have potentially come at an expense to the industry. As a lead-in to the second most common problem for vacation rentals, trust in the quality of rental accommodations is still a very big issue for American consumers.
In a sense, the national listing companies have helped grow the holiday home rental market in the last 7 years, but they have possibly stigmatized it as well. According to the report, one of the biggest is issues is trust and perception. Many potential vacation rental guests simply don’t trust the large listing companies with their precious vacation dollars.
